Superhero Billboards

I was lucky to be given the opportunity to design an ad campaign for Farmers National Bank. The client wanted multiple superhero themed billboards to celebrate their branch managers and emphasize the brand's stability.

I was given images of each of the branch managers that I was tasked with touching up and placing on new backgrounds, as well as a quote about their personal super power. Using hierarchy of scale, me and my coworkers decided the Farmer’s logo and tagline “Legendary Customer Service” would be the largest typographic elements on the billboard. This way, the brand and their great service would stand out to the viewer.

Though the client loved the designs, they decided they wanted to lean more into the superhero theme. After deliberating further with my coworkers, we decided to take inspiration from Roy Lichtenstein’ classic pop art style. We came up with two backgrounds based off of the Farmer’s brand colors, but kept the left side of the billboard white with a light halftone pattern, as to not take away from the text but still keep on theme.

We also highlighted the Branch Manager’s quote using a comic book text bubble with an exciting edge, because you can’t do a comic book theme without the classic comic text bubble.

Lastly, we increased the size of the Branch Manager’s name, as they are the people who help make Farmers National Bank legendary.

The client wanted one last billboard for this campaign, this time solely focused on Farmers National Bank.

After doing a bit of research into some other superhero themed designs, I settled on a thick sans-serif font, as it captured the essence of strength and stability. I added outlines to the font and a few pops of the Farmer’s brand colors, bringing in the fun and excitement of superheroes. I then paired it with Rota, which is one of Farmers National Bank’s approved fonts outlined in their style guide, to really solidify the brand identity.

The client also picked an image of a caped businesswoman, which I then edited to follow Farmer’s color scheme, added the Farmer’s wheat symbol to the cape, and replaced the background with a blue sky. The blue sky gave the effect that the woman was looking over a town, representing to the viewer that Farmers is looking out for its clients.

Overall, I learned a lot about designing an ad campaign, editing photos in photoshop, expanding my skills in illustrator, and working with both clients and our team at prodigal to produce a product the client loves and we are proud to have made.
